10 Recommended Things to do Before Moving into A New Home

1. Paint the walls - this is so much easier to do before all the furniture is inside the house and everything needs to be covered and moved around. See this as an opportunity to do a really good job with the painting, in the best possible terms!

2. Making arrangements regarding old and new utilities - electricity, gas and water utilities for instance might need cancelling renewing in the new place. Remember to cancel your current home internet network and change the new one if needed. This task of taking care of the utilities might be a bit of a pain, because it can involve a bit of bureaucracy, but it is very important as you don’t want to overpay!

3. Throw stuff away or donate things that can be reused - while packing, you will be faced with many dilemmas: should I keep this? Am I ever going to use this? This is just the time to say goodbye to things you never use or that can be of use to others. It feels good to let go of some things! It could leave you with more space and a cleaner mind.

4. If you plan to pesticide the new place, do it before moving in - ask the exterminator to do the job a few days before you move in, so you know your home is pest-free and that you and your family do not have to worry about the toxins and the chemicals when you do move in.

5. Update everyone that needs to be updated about your new address - whether friends, family or others, make sure everyone knows you moved, so you don’t miss out on letters, invitations and so on.

6. Get spare keys for the new home - make sure everyone in the household has set of keys when you move in, or you might find yourself having to do a lot of coordinating, until you get it done.

7. Get to know the neighbors - be the first one to say hello! It’s nice to know the people who live next to you.

8. Check the circuit breakers and see that everything is labelled properly - always good to know which breaker are the main one, and even better if you know these things before the power goes out!

9. Clean the house - you never know in what condition the former tenants will leave the house. Even the most considerate ones will miss a few things here and there. Pay a visit to the house a couple of days before moving in with everything you might need - including a bucket, rubber gloves and all the basics - so that you know everything is done just the way you like it. You can also hire a cleaning service to do this if you’re not up for the dirty job!

10. Get your security deposits back - if your last place was rented, don’t forget your security deposit! You might have to remind your former landlord about it.
